Athlete Commits Anti- Doping Rule Violation

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) announced on September 23rd that Guilio Zardo, an athlete in the sport of bobsleigh, committed an anti-doping rule violation by refusing to submit to an out-of-competition doping control test in April 2005.

In response to the CCES’ assertion that Mr. Zardo refused to submit to doping control, Mr. Zardo exercised his right under the rules of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program to pursue a hearing before an independent arbitrator for a final determination. The independent arbitrator determined that Mr. Zardo’s refusal constitutes an anti-doping rule violation, and imposed a sanction of two years ineligibility and permanent ineligibility for federal sport funding. A copy of the independent arbitrator’s decision is available on the website of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (www.adrsportred.ca).
